 Being a NZ designer means you need to include kaupapa Māori in your thinking and design

Think of design as a co-design or collaborative opportunity - don’t think someone can “sign it off” at the end.

To include and communicate with Māori - do it in their language. Designing for Māori, designing with Māori, understand their needs.

Ōtāhuhu station - designs on side of building has meaning and relation to the area, talks to the integral part of whakapapa and connection to the land.

Relationship we should have with the land.

What is our kaupapa or our intent in using and connecting with Māori culture in design.

Be fully aware of the cultural significance of events, symbols and inspirations - Parihaka, Rwanda etc.

Researching every aspect of projects through the lens of a Māori world view, as a New Zealand designer working on projects.

As students we don’t have the budget to subcontract so;

Acknowledge and understand where you get your references from, learn about the traditional meanings of forms and shapes.
